Couples Therapy and Relationship Counselling in Derby

As a qualified relationship counsellor, I have completed two years specialist training with Relate, one of the UK's leading relationship organisations.

I work with couples who are finding things difficult in their relationship, or who feel something has shifted between them.  I also work with those who want to explore an important relationship in their life, whether with a parent, adult child, sibling or friend.

You might be experiencing more conflict, feeling distant or disconnected, or struggling to communicate in a way that feels understood.  At times, it might feel like you're going in circles or no longer meeting each other in the way you once did.

In our work together, there is a space to slow things down and begin to understand what's happening between you.  We can explore patterns, communication, and the feelings underneath what is being expressed.  We may also notice what happens when one or both of you become overwhelmed, defensive or shut down, and how these nervous system responses can shape the way you relate to each other.

We can explore it in a way that feels safe and manageable for both of you

A space for both of you

It's important that both of you feel able to arrive as you are, without being judged or blamed.  I offer a calm, steady space where each of you can be heard, and where we can begin to make sense of what's happening in your relationship.

After the initial joint meeting I offer each of you an individual session.  This can offer a little more space for you to reflect on your experience and what's happening for you within the relationship

A gentle way forward

Couples therapy isn't about deciding who is right or wrong.  It's about creating a space where you can better understand each other and what's happening between you, and begin to find ways of relating that feel more supportive and connected.

When trust has been broken

Affairs and betrayals can leave couples feeling stuck between wanting to move forward and still needing to understand what has happened.

I recently wrote for Counselling Directory about why rebuilding trust involves more than simply trying to 'move on', and what can help couples begin to find a way through.

Sessions take place in person in Derby, or online if you prefer.

If you'd like to get a sense of whether working together feels right, you're welcome to get in touch.  I offer a free 15 minute call to talk things through.
