A welcoming space to talk about menopause

Menopause can feel like a lonely experience. You may be coping with physical symptoms, changing emotions or questions about your identity and relationships, while wondering whether anyone else feels the same.

The Menopause Café offers something simple but powerful – a chance to sit with other people, share experiences if you wish, and realise that you are not alone.

There is no pressure to speak, no expectation to have all the answers and no judgement. Everyone is welcome exactly as they are.

What is a Menopause Café?

A Menopause Café is an informal community gathering where people come together to talk openly about menopause.

Unlike a support group or counselling session, there is no set agenda, no advice-giving and no expectation that anyone will “fix” your problems. Instead, conversations develop naturally over a cup of tea in a relaxed and friendly environment.

People often leave feeling lighter, more connected and reassured that their experiences are shared by others.

Who is it for?

The Menopause Café is open to anyone who wants to explore or understand menopause.

You might be:

* approaching menopause and wondering what to expect
* experiencing perimenopause or menopause yourself
* post-menopausal and reflecting on your journey
* supporting a partner, friend or family member
* simply curious to learn more.

Whether you have been living with symptoms for years or have only recently begun asking questions, you are very welcome.

What happens during the session?

Each Café lasts around two hours.  After a warm welcome, we gather around tables with tea or coffee, and conversation begins naturally.

Sometimes I offer a gentle question or reading to spark discussion, but there is no formal presentation or teaching.

The conversation belongs to the people in the room.

Everyone is free to speak, listen or simply enjoy being in the company of others who understand.

What if I'm feeling anxious?

This is probably the question I’m asked most often.  Many people tell me they almost didn’t come because they were worried they wouldn’t know anyone or would feel awkward walking into the room.

Please know that this is completely understandable.

You’ll be welcomed warmly, and there’s absolutely no pressure to speak until you feel comfortable. Some people contribute throughout the session, while others mainly listen during their first visit. Both are equally valuable.

Often, people tell me afterwards that they are so glad they came.

A little about me

I’m Bec Haynes, a counsellor based in Derby with a particular interest in supporting people through menopause and the changes that midlife can bring.

Like many people, my own experience of menopause was challenging and left me searching for understanding, connection and reliable information.

That experience inspired me to create a welcoming local space where conversations about menopause can happen openly and without embarrassment.

Alongside facilitating the Menopause Café, I offer individual counselling and relationship counselling for people navigating menopause and the impact it can have on emotional wellbeing, identity and relationships.

Where and when?

The Menopause Café takes place monthly in Derby in a central welcoming venue.
